Make your way to the splendid Playhouse theatre to experience a musical like no other. Caroline, or Change, is a smash hit of a musical with a serious message, a book and lyrics by Tony Kushner, and a truly awesome score by Jeanine Tesori blending spirituals, blues, Motown, classical music, Jewish klezmer music and folk. The stars of the show are an eight year old Jewish boy who has just lost his mother, and his family's black maid Caroline. It's the early 1960s, racial troubles still rule the USA, and inequality remains the name of the game.
This is a witty, fast-paced musical set in one of the most dramatic times in the history of the USA, when racial tensions were running at an all-time high. The brilliant Sharon D Clarke is extraordinary as the defiant heroine, and the musical as a whole is wonderfully weird and sometimes surreal, complete with a singing washing machine. The Evening Standard calls it a 'modern masterpiece'. It has been awarded five stars by the Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday and Daily Telegraph. It's an Olivier award-winner that's set to enthral London audiences with its humour, imagination and depth. So don't miss it!
