Fiddler on the Roof

Not many musicals have a venerable history as impressive as this one. The original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof opened in 1964 and enjoyed the longest ever musical run in history – on stage for almost 10 years until it was finally knocked off its top spot by Grease the Musical. It remains the 17th-longest running show on Broadway, and won a grand total of nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, score, book, direction and choreography. It generated an impressive five Broadway revivals and the 1971 movie adaptation was a massive international hit. No wonder it's due back in the West End for spring 2019.

This fresh new version sold out on a limited run at the Menier Chocolate Factory. Now it's transferring to the Playhouse theatre, and we know for a fact that tickets are due to sell like hot cakes. This is the enduringly popular story of Tevye, the Jewish dad who wants to keep his dearly-held Jewish religious and cultural traditions alive despite the powerful outside influences that are heralding the winds of change. His three older daughters all want to marry for love even though the men they've chosen reject the old ways, the old customs. When the Russian Tsar decides to throw the Jews out of their village, life takes a darker turn. With a string of brilliant show tunes and the legendary Trevor Nunn at the helm, what more can you want from your next magical musical experience?
